I love 3-day weekends, and I’m fortunate (knock on wood) that my full-time job observes all of the national holidays that bring 3-day weekends – MLK Day…President’s Day…Good Friday…Memorial Day…Columbus Day…Labor Day…depending on how they fall – 4th of July, Veteran’s Day, Christmas, and New Years…. and of course, the supreme ruler of holidays – the 4-day Thanksgiving weekend.
I usually try to plan vacations and short trips around these holidays. For one thing, you can get more travel time in on shorter trips, and still keep a pretty good arsenal of vacation time at work for longer trips (in the event that I finally schedule that 2-week trip to Africa). One year, I traveled to L.A., Vegas, NYC, St. Louis, Puerto Rico, and Italy, all because I went around 3-day holidays…and I still had a good amount of vacation time left for occasional days off.
So as we approach our second 3-day weekend of the year…I encourage you take at advantage of this one and all future 3-days!
Here are some ideas on how to make the most of that extra day:
- Explore your hometown. Is there are new hotel you’ve heard about that you always wanted to check out? Well check-in, and act like a visitor in your own city! I’m sure there are plenty of cool restaurants, exhibits, boutiques, spas in your backyard that you have yet to experience.
- Take a drive. You wouldn’t believe how many interesting places are just 2-3 hour drive. This weekend I’ll be going to Chattanooga for an event. So I’ve decided to use my ‘extra day’ to check out the town. I’ll be staying at the The Chattanoogan Hotel, and maybe I’ll get a chance to revisit Lookout Mountain and Rock City. Haven’t been there since I was a kid.
- Visit a friend. 3-days are a great time to catch up with friends that aren’t nearby. If they really like you, they may even let you stay with them. What an economical way to enhance a friendship!
- Catch a last minute deal. You could be at home on your computer today browsing travel deals, and down in Miami on the beach tomorrow. JetSetters are always ready to go!
So whether you take advantage of a holiday weekend or give yourself your own holiday, every now and then, break away from the monotony with a 3-day!

There is no such thing as three-day weekends in the non-profit world aside from the 4th of July and maybe Labor Day but that depends on who you work for.
